Occasional Magazine Vol.5 No.4 (January 1948)
The Flower Show by Miss Hylda Bruce. No documentation seems to have survived of the beginnings of Milford’s annual Flower Show, so these humorous recollections of its early years from 1894 to 1914 are valuable oral history. A prime social event, the show took place at Newlands Manor in August on the Wednesday following Cowes Week, the glamorous people in Mrs. Cornwallis-West’s house party being an added attraction. The author brings the day effortlessly to life and recounts the emotions it stirred. Besides the usual competitions for vegetables, fruit and flowers, the afternoon was spent in gymkhana displays or strenuous sports for adults and children and the Lymington Town Band would perform.
