Occasional Magazine Vol.5 No.5 (April 1951)
Milford Churchwardens’ Accounts – 1713 to 1800 by Canon F. W. Sears. The author’s narrative summary of these surviving Churchwardens’ Accounts gives a valuable insight into 18th century Milford. Tinged with humour, he deals lucidly with the office, appointment and duties of churchwardens and sidesmen and explains how they raised the money for the work placed on them. Church Rates are covered, followed by special items of interest, and the paper concludes by examining how the money was actually spent. The author divides this into Normal, Sub-normal or Occasional, and Abnormal or Rare, from all of which much can be learned of life at the time.
