This short video wll show you how to use the Names Directory. If you prefer, the notes below set out the main elements in searching the Names Directory.
First, note the space for a word search alongside the search button. Just below this is a small menu to allow you to define how you want your results sorted: by Surname – A-Z or Z-A or, by Date oldest first or newest first.
Down the left-hand side, you will see six filters: Surname, Place name, Location, Year, Century, List.
If you are searching for a particular surname, then you should click on that surname. The records which contain that surname will be selected and the number of records will be shown at the top. This process can be repeated for Surname, Place name, Location, Year, Century, List.
If you still have many records to search then enter a word that is relevant to your search. There is no special vocabulary of keywords. You can keep narrowing your search with additional word searches. Your search trail is recorded above the table of remaining records.
If you are unable to isolate the records you are searching for using filters and word searching then you may wish to try Advanced searching
Once you have found a record which you would like to follow up, note down the details so that you can examine the original record at the appropriate repository.
