How to use the Marriage Registers

This short video shows how you might use the Marriage Registers. If you prefer, the notes below set out the main elements in searching our Parish Registers.

First, note the space for a word search alongside the search button. Just below this is a small menu to allow you to define how you want your results sorted: by Date – oldest/newest first.

There is a shortcut at the top right of the page to take you to Baptisms or Burials.

Filters

Down the left-hand side, you will see four filters: Groom Residence, Bride Residence, Bride Status, Year.

If you are searching for a particular Groom Residence, then you should click on that Groom Residence. The records which contain that location will be selected and the number of records will be shown at the top. This process can be repeated for Groom Residence, Bride Residence, Bride Status, Year.

Word search

If you still have many records to search then enter a word that is relevant to your search. You can keep narrowing your search with additional word searches. Your search trail is recorded above the table of remaining records.

Advanced searching

If you are unable to isolate the records you are searching for using filters and word searching, then you may wish to try Advanced searching

Results

Once you have found a record which you would like to follow up, note down the details so that you can examine the original record at the appropriate repository.
