Milford and the War 1939-1945 by Rev. S. G. Hooper. The author was Vicar of Milford from 1936 to 1949 and here gives a graphic record of how the quiet daily life of the village was completely altered while the Second World War was in progress. The villagers, local organisations and the Church played their full part in the national war effort, there were continuous troop movements in and out, and it was often a noisy place with bombs falling in Lymore, Everton and Downton, mines washed up from the sea, and training grounds nearby. Milford’s geographical location ensured incessant enemy planes overhead, flying inland using the Needles as landmark. The Solent saw much activity particularly in the preparations for D-Day in the south of England in 1944. There were joyful celebrations for VE and VJ Days in 1945 and the village slowly got back to normal.
