Occasional Magazine Vol.5 No.6 (October 1955)
The Milford Church Chest, with especial reference to the Poor Children and Vagrants by Miss E. M. J. Chandler. The author made a fresh scrutiny of documents in the Chest, which suggest that Milford was “on the whole humane and enlightened” in its treatment of poor children in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The sources for this conclusion include Overseers’ minutes plus their accounts of Poor Rates receipts and relief payments, Churchwardens’ accounts and Vestry minutes. Apprenticeship by indenture and the implications of Settlement orders are considered at length.
