The Transcription of the First Two Volumes of the Milford Registers by Rev. Canon F. W. Sears. In 1538 the Parson of every parish was ordered to keep a register of baptisms, marriages and burials, though it took a very long time before this was widely obeyed. For Milford the earliest surviving volumes cover 1594 to 1784. The author undertook to transcribe these and passes over lightly such obstacles to so doing as the damage to pages over the centuries, obsolete styles of handwriting, illegible entries, phonetic spellings and archaic words. To illustrate how these registers tell us of the life and times of the locality and its people he comments on numerous unusual and informative entries.
